If you are having problems with your iPod, try these troubleshooting steps:
Make sure that your iPod is fully charged
Make sure the Hold switch is in the off position. If the Hold switch is in the locked position, you will see a lock symbol on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen
Reset your iPod. If you are unsure how to do this, follow these steps
Plug your iPod into a different USB or FireWire port on your computer
Restart your computer
Make sure that you have the latest software updates installed
Reinstall your iPod and iTunes software. You can download the latest versions of iPod Updater and iTunes from Apple's web site
Restore your iPod using the latest iPod Updater

We really had no idea how many iPod-using Engadget readers would be so stoked to finally be able to add such a simple thing -- backgrounds -- to their portable audio player. A new hack that claims to add a background to your 1st or 2nd gen nano (at the expense of dropping it down to the 1.1.1 firmware) have added customizable backgrounds with modder software iPodWizard.
